Sourcing from Turkey to Iran means finding a supplier that can deliver the required product against measurable specifications, clear commercial terms and a workable delivery plan. A low quotation is only one input. Before committing funds, the buyer needs evidence about the seller, the goods, the total cost and the feasibility of the transaction.
This guide follows a commercial purchase from the initial brief to a controlled first order. If the origin is still undecided, start with our guide to choosing a sourcing country for Iran. Here, the focus is on managing a purchase from Türkiye.
When is Türkiye worth considering?
Geographic proximity can make Türkiye a useful candidate, but it does not make every order cheaper or faster. Factory location, shipment size, production scheduling, import requirements and available payment arrangements can change the outcome. Assess the actual product and shipment instead of assuming a general country advantage.
The International Trade Administration’s manufacturing overview identifies machinery, textiles, chemicals and other manufacturing industries in Türkiye. That industrial base provides a starting point for supplier research. It does not establish that a particular product can be imported into Iran or that a particular seller is suitable.
- For recurring orders, investigate replenishment capacity and specification consistency.
- For custom products, test sample development and change control.
- For urgent purchases, verify physical stock and readiness rather than accepting a generic fast shipping promise.
- For small orders, check minimum quantities and fixed documentation and transport costs.
1. Write the purchasing brief before searching for factories
Terms such as premium quality or export grade do not define an acceptance standard. Prepare a specification sheet that a supplier can answer line by line. Include the intended use alongside the commercial product name so that visually similar products are not treated as equivalent.
- Product description, intended use, model or drawing and acceptable materials.
- Dimensions, tolerances, colour and other measurable requirements.
- First order quantity, repeat demand and latest acceptable delivery date.
- Packaging, units per carton, weights and labelling requirements.
- Delivery city in Iran and required technical or test documentation.
- Sample acceptance criteria and changes requiring written approval.
Review tariff classification and the destination requirements with the person responsible for the import. A supplier’s suggested code is a starting point for verification. The World Customs Organization describes the HS at the six digit level; the applicable national tariff line and operational requirements need separate checking.
2. Compare manufacturers and trading companies on their actual role
Buying directly from a factory is not automatically the best option. A manufacturer may require a larger order, while a trading company may consolidate several items. The latter arrangement can work when the source and quality responsibilities are transparent. Establish who manufactures, who signs the contract and who handles a claim.
Build an initial list from manufacturers’ websites, chamber directories and specialist exhibition exhibitor lists. Treat directory membership as a lead, not approval. Send the same brief to several candidates and request missing information before shortlisting them.
Check the seller’s legal details against Turkish official records. MERSİS supports commercial registration records and procedures; published registration notices can be checked through the Turkish Trade Registry Gazette. Our overseas supplier verification checklist explains how to connect identity checks with operational evidence.
3. Ask for quotations that can be compared
Send every candidate the same revision of the request for quotation, or RFQ. Ask separately for unit price, currency, quotation validity, minimum order, production lead time, sample costs, tooling charges and delivery terms. Where manufacturing is subcontracted, clarify who controls the subcontracted work.
A useful request is: “Please quote the attached specification for the first and repeat order quantities. State minimum order, production time, sample cost, packed weights and dimensions, available documents and payment terms. List every deviation from the specification separately.”
Understand what EXW and FCA include
As ICC Academy explains, EXW generally leaves loading and export formalities with the buyer. Under FCA, the seller handles export clearance and, at the seller’s premises, loading. Specify the precise named place and Incoterms® 2020 instead of accepting “delivery in Turkey”.
Request a list of excluded charges and a separate transport proposal for the remaining route. The logistics and customs service is relevant when coordinating those responsibilities.
4. Calculate the cost to the agreed destination
Build a budget covering the goods, samples and testing, inspection, additional packaging, transport, obtainable insurance, lawful payment charges, applicable import costs and domestic delivery. Add only costs not already included in the seller’s quotation. Separate recoverable taxes from economic cost while still accounting for their cash flow effect.
Illustrative example, not market pricing: for 500 units, Supplier A quotes EUR 20 each and the other assessed costs total EUR 2,500. The combined amount is EUR 12,500, or EUR 25 per unit. Supplier B quotes EUR 22 each with EUR 1,000 in other assessed costs: EUR 12,000 in total, or EUR 24 per unit. The calculation shows why the lower unit quotation can produce the higher overall cost. It is not a customs estimate.
5. Connect the approved sample to the purchase contract
Identify the sample against a controlled specification revision. Record the acceptance method and establish whether the sample came from normal production or was made separately. For a sensitive application, visual inspection cannot replace appropriate testing.
The production order should address substitutions, shortages, defects, claim deadlines, correction costs and the evidence required before each payment milestone. There is no universal safe deposit percentage. Link the structure to supplier risk and genuine production commitments. Our commercial contracts service covers the framework for defining those obligations.
6. Confirm transaction feasibility before payment
Review the parties, product, end use, bank and transport arrangements against applicable requirements. The official OFAC Iran sanctions page is one relevant source; origin country rules and other applicable regimes also need consideration.
Before committing funds, obtain case specific confirmation of import registration requirements, product permissions and available payment arrangements from the responsible authorities and providers. Match the beneficiary to the contracting party. Do not base the purchase on false descriptions, concealed destinations or inaccurate documents.
Frequently asked questions
Must the buyer travel to Türkiye?
Not to build an initial shortlist. Depending on the order value, product complexity and unresolved questions, an independent visit or inspection may be appropriate. A video call alone does not establish factory ownership or production capability.
What is the minimum budget or delivery time?
There is no reliable universal figure. Quantity, stock, sampling, permits and transport scheduling all matter. Obtain separate estimates for production, transport waiting time and destination procedures from the party responsible for each stage.
Does an approved sample justify a large order?
It confirms only the sample examined. A pilot order and suitable production or shipment checks help establish whether the delivered goods match it.
